2007 Tablas Creek Tannat

Community Tasting Notes

  • the best part of tasting Tannat is to recognize what it adds in blending with other wines. This wine was actually quite good, but because 2007 is a pretty sturdy vintage, this wine was itself sturdy.

  • -- decanted 90 minutes before initial taste --
    -- tasted non-blind over 2 to 3 hours --

NOSE: a bit fumey and "dark"; raisins; a bit earthy; not funky; not high-toned; medium to medium+ expressiveness.

BODY: medium-full bodied; sediment present; only the slightest bit of bricking --- this still has a youthful appearance.

TASTE: still tannic; medium to medium+ acidity; moderately hot (labelled at 15.0%); earthy/dusty purple fruit; very ripe, with some noticeable oak; not funky; not stemmy; honestly, I can't say this has improved with age. This bottle was cellared by me since 2010, when I purchased it at the winery.

  • The wine now appears to be in its peak drinking window.

  • I did a short decant on night one and scored this 90. I then vacuum sealed and put in the refrigerator. On the second night, it was much improved and I scored it 91. Either decant a bottle for a longer period of time if opening now or hold. I plan to hold my last bottle a little longer

  • Decanted 2-3 hours. Best at the end. Tannins softened considerably. Notes of chocolate really came through in this wine. Very full bodied, but no fruit bomb by any means. Can't believe I bought this for only$21 back in the day before TCV got so much press!

  • I decided to open a bottle of this based on the TCV vintage chart that said it was now ready to drink. Well, it is lovely. Bunches of dark fruit on the palate, lots of tannins but they are pretty soft. I decanted 3 hours and I think that helped. But to be honest, this wine is still young. I would give this another couple of years before opening again. I only have 2 bottles left, so I do not have much room to experiment.

  • Plenty going on here. Lush dried fruit, seductive herbal and spice components, combined with palate drenching acidity make for a very romantic experience.

  • At first i didn't get much nose on this deeply red-purple wine, but that's ok. The juicy blue fruit nose arises in time. Was it too cold at first? Did it just need some time? This food friendly, assertive wine has blueberry/boysenberry flavors riding on a tangy mineral/tannic frame with a finish that lasts, making this a very pleasant complement to a meal.

  • Fabulous wine. I only have 3 bottles left and really need to keep my hands off of them. Delicious, but I think another 3-5 years and this wine will be off the charts good. Incredible body, dark purple color, lingering aftertaste that just went on and on. A real keeper. Just another great TCV wine.

  • The TCV vintage chart says this wine is in "early maturity." I disagree. It is still very young. Incredibly inky, purple color, rich tannins, broad mouth feel. I would leave until 2016 before I try one again. Loved this wine, however.

  • Still pretty disintegrated. I decanted one hour. A bit closed in. Very tight wine. I would say this has great potential, but I will not try another bottle from the cellar for at least 1 year, maybe two.

  • Decanted 2 hrs. Fruit has mellowed with cellar time, secondary earthy elements have gained purchase. Developing an old world profile, except for the lush ripe Paso fruit. In a pretty good place right now. Drink or hold

  • Brought to restaurant and asked for a decanter... they brought a chilled bucket. Whatever. Tight and tannic upon opening, though not obnoxiously so. Very fruity with a macerated boysenberry, blueberry, and blackberry type profile. Some brambles and smoked wood. Not much else going on. Sturdy tannins show up on the finish but are softened by the ripe, forward fruit. Opened up over time but never gained complexity. Better with food than without, this was delicious with our Basque meal. Might benefit from cellar time... this certainly has plenty of fruit and tannins.

  • What a cool grape! If you enjoy mourvedre and cab franc, you'll have another wine to add to your repertoire - Tablas Creek's Tannat. Popped and poured this chilled bottle and it is a dark, dense glass of purple with a magenta ring. On the nose is a red fruity smokiness. On the palate reminds me cherries that have a hint of tannic bitterness, but in a good way! The tannins hit mid palate and the finish just goes on, and on, and on. I read Tablas Creek ferments this grape in open-air to help smooth out the tannins, and their technique shows. We're really enjoying this one - stems up!

  • Sweet black-red fruit; plum, blueberry, raspberry, black tea, pomegranate, anise, oak. Bordeaux-style but with ripe fruit. I think the addition of Cabernet stands-out with the a Cali Cab structure, but it's more savage than that. Not quite Rhone, this is, for me, like a cross between a New World Syrah and a Cahors. This is really enjoyable and a bit too candied for me to be outstanding. This is supple and giving, soft and round in the mouth, with a good finish. I opened the bottle ~22 hours ago. Definitely improved with air.

  • A day in Paso (Denner, Tablas Creek, Graves ...): -- tasted a single glass, non-blind in tasting room ––
    – 90% Tannat, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon --

Purple color of great depth. The nose on this is dark-fruited and simple. Full bodied palate, and tannic. Loganberry with hints of leather and flowers on the palate. I liked this more than ‘06 vintage of this bottling.

  • Dark purple, great berry/smoky nose, still a little young but lots of fruit and the tannins are well-balanced. Excellent with barbequed tri-tip!

  • Kind of a cross between a petite sirah and a young cali cab. Once again that '07 Tablas Creek fruit is delicious!

  • This tannat is still a bit too young, but it shows nice dark berries and smoke aromas and other fruit in the mouth. Strong yet smooth tannins inspire further drinking for good health :-) - tannat is known as the healthiest grape. Goes great with duck and steak and this one in particular goes great with chocolate, too.

  • My first Tannat and what a wonderful surprise. Nose booms with cinnamon and pepper/spice. Nice, hint of sweet chewy tannins that build with air. Suave texture that has weight and a little dexterity. Nice depth to the licorice black and blue fruits. Sweetness to the fruit that just doesn't cross the line for me. Finishes with a repeat of the pepper/spice. I would have guessed Syrah if I drank this blind. Another very well made and interesting wine from Tablas Creek for me.
