This was a special experience...the bottle was brought to a dinner at our house, by invitees. The acidity and tannins have faded and mellowed, but the flavors are now round and complex. I note particularly that the wine featured a (long) aftertaste that included a mixture of fenugreek and galangal, along with citron and tangerine peel. These were a surprise. I'm very glad to have been able to taste this gem.

Not the best year, but Margaux always makes pretty great wine snd this was no exception. A bit shy on opening. Needed some extra air to pull out the red velvety style. Very plush and enjoyable.

Absolutely spectacular for it being a ho-hum bdx vintage. Popped and decanted for sediment. This wine was so fragile and funky initially, but after about 15 minutes in the decanter that Margaux elegance started shining through. We were worried it would fade but it continued to stand up throughout the hour of enjoying it with friends. Fruit is definitely muted and the tannins have mostly faded, so I would drink now.

A private dinner @ Scharzhof. From magnum; drinking a wine from 1987 is always special to my, seeing it is my birth year. Not great, but still pretty good though. Turned out to be Veronika's birth year as well so she was also very glad with the generous in bringing of this bottle!

A private dinner (Scharzhof, Wiltingen, Germany): Magnum. Mature but lively appearance; perfectly classical left bank nose; fresh and elegant palate, slender but not thin, metallic edge to the acidity, tannins are mostly resolved; sweet fruit and black tea on the finish, good length.

Tried this Saturday night with friends. I was a bit concerned after reading tasting notes on CellarTracker that it was past peak. However, we loved it. Really opened up with Prime Rib. Popped and poured. My guests loved it, and noted it smelled of the sea. Earthy. Has a few years of good drinking left in it. Decided not to open my last bottle of it and hold it for the next gathering.

It's not a bad wine as there was clearly some pleasure to be found. There was a sense of refinement, but it lacked the depth, concentration and complexity expected from a First Growth. Served double blind, once its identity was revealed, clearly the wine looked and tasted much older than its true age. If you have some remaining in your cellar, I'd drink it sooner than later as the wine is only going to continue on the downhill course of life.

Definitely past it's prime but still interesting. Nose had dark fruits, menthol and violets. A bit thin in the mouth but still holding up well. Nice balance to medium finish. Drink up.

Dark garnet color. No flaws or sediment. Major rim variation in the glass. Very earthy nose. Aroma of berry (black/blue). No tannins. Low alcohol. Medium finish. Beyond peak. Still flavorful. Not much bottle life left.

Un peu "over the hill" à mon goût....il aurait été préférable de le boire avant...mais tout de même, un grand vin. Le bouquet ne s'est jamais pleinement épanoui.

Tasted this with friends. This wine had a fantastic nose and a beautiful color. The wine is drinking well now. It did not change at all over a 2 hour drinking period.

Commanderie de Bordeaux: This was better than I expected, based on the reputation of the 1987 vintage in Bordeaux. That being said, this wine would have probably performed better in 1998 than it did in 2008. Very mature appearance, with a garnet core and some significant amber at the edge. The straightforward bouquet offered up scents of "almost-ripe" dark fruits, wild animal and a woodsy-underbrush character. A bit savage on the palate -- not particularly generous in the middle -- and a rather short, clipped finish. It was fun and educational to taste this wine though, and I enjoyed it more than my tasting note may suggest.

1987 Tasting 3 Bordeaux and 3 Cabernets. Showed slightly closed at first, then opened nicely to a fruity nose with hints of both celery and stems, tasted like nice chocolate with hints of a medium, slightly watery body in the mouth, fruity finish and pleasant aftertaste but a noticeable letdown from the top 3 wines. My #4 and group #4.

1987 Bordeaux Tasting (Lafayette, Ca.): Tasting 8 1987 Bordeaux with Andre Fournier at Primas. Rich fruity nose aand mouth with hints of peppery spice that is medium/big in enjoyment, lacks elegance of other vintages, strong finish, definitely Margaux! My #6.

Big surprise for the vintage. Palate is feminine with lingering sweetness despite being short. Prefer the palate over the nose.
