Day later from memory. I tend to drink my Burgundy on the young side, for two reasons. One, I often can't keep my hands off them, and two, I have no desire to leave them to my estate! So it's not often I find myself uncorking something fully mature like this. There is nothing primary left, and the fruit is attenuated and buried deep in the earthy, loamy, mushroomy bloody iron bones of Gevrey. The wine now is savory, full-bodied and a tad heavy. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on vintage variation and the wonders of bottle age. My wife, on the other hand, was distinctly unimpressed and after one sniff had that look of "what just died in your glass?"

Well, as a result of a self-inflicted wound, I had the rare opportunity to do a mini-vertical of this wine, since I opened a bottle of the '10 Boillot Gevrey by mistake last night and didn't drink all of it (see that note for the counterpoint). So tonight I did a side-by-side, and it was quite revealing.
The color is an identical bright translucent red. Do you think color in and of itself can be inviting? I do, but I don't know why. Is that synesthesia, or just being drunk? I think I know the answer-any good wine seems inviting to me...
But, the '08 is almost immediately more evolved, and I don't mean spiritually, even as a pun. The '10 is still very taut and nervy, while the '08 seems in this humble reviewer's opinion, all about the appellation, bursting with iron, blood and earth along with dark red fruits. It may get a little better, but it's good right now after about a half hour in the glass.
I drank the rest of the '10 and about half the '08 with a nicely prepared porterhouse topped with sautéed cherry tomatoes and they both went great. The well-seasoned meat seemed to penetrate right to the heart of the fruit in either wine. So I like 'em both, and it's kind of a question of now or later.

surprisingly complex given its level. nose of warm earth, red fruits, and cedar. palate shows nice acidity and structure supporting the red fruits (tends toward the tart, cranberry end of the spectrum). nice length and a pleasing finish.

Truffle Dinner 2013 (Sydney, Australia): Roasted nuts and rhubarb. Palate is more about the minerality, but there isn't a whole lot of character. Medium length.

Beautiful and enticing nose of ripe raspberry, earth and iron. Flavors are very complete with a excellent lift of crispness and a clean red fruit character. A little bit tight right now but should be beautiful with some age. Nice clean long finish.

Quite open aromatics of dark Gevrey minerality. Red fruited with somewhat pronounced acidity. Good deepness for a villages, but much lighter in style than Boillot's Evocelles. Excellent.

Opened up after decanting and an hour or two. A fine Burgundy. Cherries, minerals - I could definitely taste the soil. Silky finish.

Overly tannic, harsh. After an hour decant, a bit more approachable

Good wine, black fruit but a silkiness I associate with Volnay, some tannins. A pleasure to drink, but perhaps too young.

Tart cranberry on the nose with a firm pleasant acidity. This is a very nice wine.
