Although complex aromatically, this lighter bodied and styled wine does not follow through on the palate. The finish, while pleasant, is short. Since the wine is ready to drink today, there is no reason to wait for further evolution.

Tasted it blind out of a decanter. Clear, medium plus ruby in color, fading to garnet on the rim. There is also some sediment. The nose is clean and of medium intensity. The nose is developing but is by no means tired, with aromas of black fruit, oak, cofee and forest floor. The palate is dry and fairly complex, with medium plus acidity, tannins, body and flavor intensity. The alcohol is medium and not obtrusive. The length is medium. Pleasant, well integrated flavors of black fruit (cassis). Overall, this is a very good wine wihch is holding up remarkably well and appears to be younger than what it really is. I would drink now, as it is not likely to improve much with further ageing.

Eleven 1998 St Emilions and a Lone Pomerol. Maybe some Yquem too (Bethesda, MD): Somewhat of a dissapointment, given the estate's superstar/rockstar/sexstar whatever you want to call it, status. The wine was diffuse on the nose, with vegetal aspargus qualities. I had initially thought that it would flesh out with more air; it lent itself that type of feeling. For our edification, Dave held onto his glass for another 45 minutes and the wine continued to diminuate, showing more muted and less full. Perhaps they picked early or maybe held on to late and felt the brunt of the rains that largely passed most of the growers who picked their Merlot in 98. This wine does not live up to its price tag or status.

Opening with complex mineral, spice box and black fruit aromatics. The wine had a plush entry, but lacked the depth and concentration of morerecent vintages. With 98, you see a huge jump in style and quality. This was the first year Sophie Foucarde began turning things around for the property. Drink this wine on the young side.

This kicked off with a powerful nose. But that's where it left off. Medium bodied and light on the palate without much follow through. Ready to drink today.

A dark ruby in color, the glass sports a nose of sweet black cherry and rasberry preserves, toasted nuts, chaparral and wet slate. In the mouth, the wine is quite full with a strong cherry and berry fruit profile, balancing acidity and healthy tannins that seem to have softened quite a bit, which is particularly noticeable on the finish.

Drinking at peak, really smooth and very fine tannins. Quite good finish.

1998 Right Bank Bordeaux Dinner (Rockville, Maryland): Deep purple core. Tight, stalky bouquet with a hint of celery. The palate tastes fine though. I just don’t find the bouquet appealing.
