Clean and attractive mid-weight singe quinta. Pleasant berryish nose without a great deal of complexity or ambition on the palate to suggest great value in keeping more than about five years.

Purchased for $70. I've been eyeing this up in my local wine store, but always had a reason "not" to pull the trigger. But this time, I got the urge. Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the most traditional Quintas and I'm a sucker for tradition. The grapes are picked and sorted by hand and then foot trodden for 4hrs. I've read that the first 3hrs are a traditional "march" and the final hour is a "dance". Whatever it is they do, they make a marvelous wine. This Port is a garnet in color with hints of tan and burnt orange. The nose is simply outstanding with kirsch, blackberry liquor, boysenberry jam, spice and vanilla. On the palate, this takes my breath away. Rounded tannins, but still some strength left. Absolutely delicious juicy acidity. Hard to believe this wine is over 20yrs old. Dark cherry, vanilla, spice, blueberry compote. This is really youthful. In fact, if it wasn't for the color, I would have never guessed this was 20+ years old. This has the legs for another 20. Outstanding. Grade: A

D5 DipWSET FORTIFIED WINES with Adam Chase and Matt Gaughan; 4/9/2022-4/10/2022 (St Francis' Yacht Club San Francisco): A: Deep garnet [others in the room say ruby] N: Medium (+) nose of sun-dried tomato, dried fig, dried cherry, blackcurrants, chocolate, menthol, white pepper, TOBACCO and LEATHER. P: Sweet, medium (+) acidity [instructor says HIGH], high ripe tannins, high alcohol, full body, medium (+) intensity and long finish. Beautiful balance of acidity with this ripe developing fruit. Length is optimal and born by a good intensity. The complexity here is noteworthy spanning primary and tertiary fruit, herbaceous, oak and other signs of development. This is an outstanding quality wine. The wine is suitable for ageing. REMEMBER FOR EXAM: VINTAGE PORT IS BOTTLE AGED AND COLHEITA IS BARREL AGED

Deep dark center, dark red/purple rim with no significant signs of age. Dense nose, blackberry and blueberry, intense, sweet and smooth, ferric. Sweet and complex, blackberries, intense, vinous, good acidity and tannin, great length. Fantastic vintage port, modern style, great fruit, good now and probably for 5-10 years more.

Very pretty notes of sweetened coco, spice, caramel, and candied berries, followed by a light jolt of alcohol. More of the same on the palate, coming up just short of balanced. Heavy, powdery sediment. While delicious and satisfying, the wine did not meet expectations. Overall, at 19 years, this bottle likely succumbed to the 'no great wines, just great bottles' adage.

The nose showed dusty black cherry, with sweet minerality, dried florals, tobacco, and earth. On the palate, I found silky, deep textures lifted by wonderfully fresh black fruits with sweet minerality, zesty spices, mounting inner violet florals. The finish was long and rich with earthy dark fruits, sweet brown spices, lingering floral and mineral tones. This was earthy, ripe and wonderfully balanced.

2016 Port Harvest Tour; 9/18/2016-9/25/2016 (Portugal): One of the wettest years they had in many years. The wine is in a shutdown phase right now. You have to work to get some aromatics. Elegant, but lacks the richness that I would expect from this VP. Clearly it is in its "dumb phase."

Gorgeous and plush nose upon opening, of blueberry and mineral. Mellows out after a few hours in the decanter, becomes less exciting but still pretty good. Threw a lot of sediment and is beginning to soften up, entering its secondary phase. I'd leave it another decade and see what happens, as there's a lot of spicy and minerally secondary complexity in there that just needs more time.

really nice -- opened 2-3 hours before drinking and decanted. Loads of fruit on the palate -- plum, cherry. Also some dark berries. Alcohol was well integrated, as were the tannins. Finish went on for 25-30 seconds. This is still very young and has a ways ahead of it.

Lush wine with plum cake, spice and blueberry aromas on the nose. The palate shows perfect integration of succulent black fruit, grape spirit and fine tannins. The sweet finish is long, balanced and very complex. Drink it now or during the next 20 till 25 years

Tasted at the Dow's Port Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia - Extremely dark+ color! Extremely young, floral nose. Shockingly good. A fine wine. Not a long ager, but wonderful. Now and in the medium term. Really glycerin/smooth on the palate. 94 points.
