Winemaker’s Notes
The 2009 Lindemans Cabernet Sauvignon is from the Nursery Vineyard. This vineyard is significant in the history of Coonawarra and of Lindemans.
It was the original vineyard nursery created by John Riddoch when he portioned 1000 acres of his vast landholdings for closer settlement in 1890. By 1897, James Childs (brother of John Childs who later became a blocker) was Riddoch’s nurseryman, presiding over “the show place of the Fruit Colony; for there one
sees the perfection of high culture and every portion
of the work systematised”. By that stage there was a “substantial stone house” on the block, plus a packing house and stables. In the ensuing two decades there were a series of owners (including the famed Harold Richardson who owned the neighbouring ‘Pyrus’ block and winery) before the block was finally purchased
in 1924 by Robert and Ella Childs. They maintained ownership right up until 1968.
In 1968, both blocks (Nursery & Pyrus) were purchased as the Nursery Vineyard by Lindemans. A year later, 8.26ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and 4ha of Malbec was planted. Since 1985, the Nursery block has been a source of premium grapes for Lindemans Coonawarra Pyrus, with the inaugural vintage winning the highly prized Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1986. (The trophy is presented annually for the best one-year-old red table wine at the Melbourne Wine Show.)
This 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is specially selected for Barrel Series 13 and is a great representation of Lindemans and its’ focus on single vineyard wines that reflect Coonawarra, the vintage and the vineyard ‘terroir’.
Colour: This wine is dense black with a purple rim. Aroma: Vibrant blackberry and regional mint fruit
aromas complimented by toasty French oak.
Palate: The palate is concentrated with sweet black fruits, has a rich mid palate framed by structural tannins and balanced by fine grained French oak producing a wine that is powerful, even and long.

Lindemans has a long history in the district through buying wines for blending in the 1950’s and formally arrived in Coonawarra with the purchase of the Rouge Homme winery and vineyards in 1965. Since then Lindemans has expanded the vineyard holdings to include the vineyards of St George, Limestone Ridge, Nursery and St Cedds.
From these vineyards the Coonawarra benchmark wines of St George Cabernet Sauvignon, Limestone Ridge Shiraz Cabernet and Pyrus Cabernet blend are produced.
Lindemans has won many awards for these wines at National Wine Shows and the tradition of producing fine wines with fruit concentration and Coonawarra distinctiveness continues with this specially selected barrel.
