  • 2004 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

A tale of 2 Tempranillo, pt 1. (Actually 75% Tempranillo plus Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano). Smooth yet penetrating red cherry flavors, framed by dried berries and mild tobacco. Served with a hearty Spanish meatball dish with browned Maitake & Blue Oyster mushrooms and the tertiary complexity from aging was a welcome shroomy/umami complement. Loving the Tondonia at age 20 (or more) & grabbing some 09 I see as a pre-arrival sale item to fill this cellar slot. A fun contrast with the young Impulsivo that followed, I'm publishing that note 1st so this one can be CT TN# 3000, having started this habit when the 04 CA vintage was in the channel. :)

  • 2018 Cayuse Tempranillo Impulsivo En Chamberlin Vineyard

A tale of 2 Tempranillo pt 2 -- but other than the black cherry base, I can't really pick out the variety from the Cayuse sour red cabbage stylings from their yeast or trickery or whatever that is. Thoroughly delicious for the post meal, pre dessert selection; it would have worked with the meatballs as well but the older LdH was the right call for the meal. Maybe I should have held one of these Impulsivos longer term but they all fell victim to impulse one by one, here's an extra-good wine that can't miss. But I'm not going to restart buying this direct, either.

  • 2018 Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Coastview Vineyard - Terraces

Pop and even before the first pour, that amazing super-Syrah aromas of dark blue fruit, black plum reduction, bacon, & olive are apparent through the neck of the bottle! But on the palate it was somewhat more savory, ferrous and structured than I was expecting. Better with a few hours in the decanter. Hold 3-6 years for upside potential.

5/22/2013 9:59:00 PM - Thanks for pointing out my TN on the wrong Bourdy 2007, I've reposted the note for the correct red wine.
