  • 2014 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett

At home after work. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, yellow lemon colour. Thin legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of green apple, tangerine, citrus lemon-lime, weathered stones minerality, light petroleum, honeysuckle, bit of burnt rubber tyre smoke and spice. Developed.
On the palate, medium-dry/medium-sweet, good bracing high acidity, low alcohol (7.5%), medium- body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of juicy green apple, citrus lemon-lime, weathered slate stones minerality, sweet honeysuckle, bit of smokiness and spice to the medium+ finish. Only a little of the sweet tangerines that were more obvious on the nose.
Very good quality for me. Doesn't really give me any difficult/bad vintage feel. Good supporting acidity. Was thinking to drink this sooner after reading other reviews here but no hurry at all I feel.

  • 2013 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne

Remainder from wife Asparagus dinner. Few hours of air in bottle. Drank in Grassl Cru.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of cracked black pepper spice, dark olives, black cherries, blackberries, cassis, black tar earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), very fine smooth high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury umami earthiness, dark olives, cracked black peppercorns, blackberries, black cherries, cassis, tar, dark animal meat. Long savoury tarry finish.
Excellent quality. Drinking a good place already.

  • 2018 Domaine Michel Gros Nuits St. Georges

Remainder from wife Asparagus dinner. Drank in Grassl Cru.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of dark red florals, macerated ripe strawberries, dark red cherries, licorice, hint of salted meat. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), bristly high tannins, burly medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of salty minerality, iron meat, licorice, polished dark red cherries, macerated ripe strawberries. Long spicy finish.
Good quality. Quite a lot of substance if you consider that this is just an NSG Village. Gripe here is the lack of acidity and elevated alcohol and tannin. A bit Syrah-like.

6/10/2020 7:09:00 PM - ey Derek, The Carnasciale is an interesting intellectual exercise given the grape varietal. You can see both the Cab Franc and Merlot in notes in there. We did it over a zoom blind tasting and everyone was guessing it to be Cab Franc straight off that bat. The wine was bit closed at first after opening the bottle, but letting it air opened it up beautifully but then after about an hour, it falls off the cliff. So I'd recommend to drink with a few people. It will definitely be appreciated but it wont be a hit I think. Specially at that price point. I have a slight doubt that perhaps I drank it 1-2 years too early.

3/22/2014 9:46:00 AM - Hi there. I appreciate all your detailed tasting notes here. I'm also a big fan of wines from the Piedmont and Tuscany. I'm trying to build my cellar of Barolo in particular, branching out to Brunello as well.
