6/30/12: Drank in Bellport during pre-birthday weekend with grilled steaks. The nose was elegant and precise. Just a wonderful food wine, so much better as it was coming out of magnum. 93/100

Deep, rich, mouth-staining purple color. Inky. Nose consisting of strong floral notes, initially enveloped with a wealth of dark brooding fruit. Hints of Chinese spices as well. On the palate, the wine was as thick as it looked -- real weight. Within 30 minutes of opening, a definite presence of good fruit encased in a tight mesh of mouth-drying tannins. A long finish that even outlasted the accompanying food pairings. So much fruit and alcohol that the wine almost seemed monolithic and one-dimensional -- nothing more than a strong punch in the face of alcohol and ripe fruit. But 2 hours later, the tannins softened and the fruit evolved. Much less astringent, softer on the palate, with a less bold but generally pleasing finish. Overall, a somewhat-cliched but well-done Napa Cabernet.
