  • 2007 Sebeka Cabernet Pinotage

This medium bodied, slightly fruit forward, dry red wine is an easy and tasty way to introduce yourself to uncommon grape varietals since it's blended with the popular varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. It had a great quality to price ratio. I bought it for under $10. This wine went well with the savory dry rubbed BBQ pork ribs I made for dinner. It was a blend of 59% Cabernet and 41% Pinotage. Pinotage is a cross (not hybrid) of two grape vines, Pinot Noir and Cinsault, from the same genus and species (vitus vinifera). It is THE signature grape varietal of South Africa. When Pinotage is made well, it's wonderful and this wine is! When Pinotage is not made well, it can smell and taste like you're dragging a roasted wild boar down a tar road and burning rubber at the same time! SIGHT - clear, dark, ruby with a pink rim. AROMAS & FLAVORS - brambly wild blackberry, fresh raspberry, black cherry liquer, vanilla bean, cedar, mint, fresh tomato on the vine, sage, thyme, subtle dusty earth or mineral, subtle oak. It had moderate tannins. ALCOHOL - 13.5%

A delightful crowd pleasing lively dry red wine at a great price. This sells out every weekend where I work, so I just had to buy it and try it. I am glad I did. It can make a great go-to house wine. Now I understand why it's so appealing. SIGHT: garnet center, ruby rim, medium concentration, stained tears/legs, thin but persistent legs. AROMAS & FLAVORS: fruit - ripe blackberry and black cherry, dried cranberry; non-fruit - dried rose petals, new leather, sweet baking spices like cinnamon and cloves, toasty vanilla, thyme, oregano, cedar, eucalyptus, mint; earth - hint of truffle or mushroom and mineral; wood - aged in oak. TANNINS: firm and lingering. FINISH: long. ALCOHOL: 13.8%

  • NV David Stone Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine is what I call a “Cocktail Cab”. It is so light and fruit forward that you can drink this as a cocktail wine with no food. It’s definitely not your classic rich full bodied oaky California Cabernet Sauvignon. However, it does have it’s merits for certain occasions, those who want an easy drinking red, or those who are starting to drink red wines. This wine can also work as a good summer sipping red because of how light it is. It reminds me of Gamay, Grenache or even “Dubonnet” which is a fortified herb infused red aperitif wine. SIGHT – ruby in color, clear, transparent. AROMAS – Fruit: ripe, sweet raspberries, candied cherries, cranberries, sugar plums, fruit punch; Non-fruit: roses or violets, hint butterscotch, tomatoes on the vine, hint oregano and thyme, little to no oak. FLAVORS – raisins, cherry cola, plum cobbler. STRUCTURE – low acid, low tannins and almost off-dry. ALCOHOL – 12 % which is very low compared to most California red wines but is on par or comparable to alcohol level in wines from parts of Europe. I found this at Walgreen’s, 2 for $10, and just had to try it out of curiosity. So, I will be trying the Chardonnay soon which I bought at the same time. This is a wine from the Gallo portfolio of labels.
