  • 2005 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos

Clear, honey-esque amber colour. Clean, intense nose of figs and sultanas. Sweet, full-body and flavour with notes of dried apricots, grapefruit, seville orange and citrus peel. Wonderful lick of furmint acid on the finish. Excellent length. Infanticide to drink so young. Leaf day according to Maria Thun's calendar.

  • 2002 Château D'Escurac

Clear, deep purple; youthful in appearance. Clean, light nose; some vanilla, cassis and white pepper tones. The palate begins well with some nice cassis fruit (with hints of pepper and coffee) but ends abrubtly with a solid wall of dumb, hard tannins which aren't integrated into the overall structure. Pepper on finish. Despite my overly critical notes this wine was of good quality and was actually more elegant than the picture painted above - that said I wouldn't buy a second bottle at the same price (£16.99) but might encourage someone to try it for themself - a reasonable claret with even limited bottle age is increasingly hard to find at this price. Although no expert, I suspect that this might be in it's apogee. In the end the acid, which is there too, may burst through the tannic wall and dominate the limited fruit. Went quite well with homemade burgers, oak-smoked bacon and blue cheese. Drank on a flower day according to Maria Thun's calendar.

  • 2005 Domaine Alain Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Tradition

Clear, very youthful, medium intensity purple. Clean, enticing sweetness of oak with soft, red fruits (strawberries and raspberries). Dry, high acid with a good grip of very fine tannin. Great presence and lush ripeness without compromising elegance. Ripe red fruits, sweet spices (cinnamon, liquorice), and floral notes. Very sad to see the end of the bottle which came far too soon. A wonderful wine which will still improve immensely. Went very well with shepherd's pie. Drank on a root day according to Maria Thun's calendar.
