  • 2021 Cristom Pinot Noir Jessie Vineyard

Decanted and drank over 10 hours. Best drinking window was between hour 1 and hour 3. This juice is very acidic; not sure if it’s too young to be drinking right now or if the 2021 vintage is just heavy with under-ripe fruit. Very tight and did not seem to want to open up, even with the extended time in the decanter. I have been a big fan of Jessie over the years and have always rated older/aged vintages between 91 - 97 pts. I won’t be buying the 2021 vintage again, but rather will search out older vintages between 2012 - 2019 instead.
Rating the 2021 on 2/11/24 as 87 pts. Might improve over time, but wouldn’t open until after 2026/2027.

  • 1994 Bodegas Roda Rioja Roda I Reserva

Popped-and-poured; drank over 8 hours. Very tight and shut down in the first 2 hours, but really opened up after 2 hours in the decant. I agree with drwine2001’s post on 4/30/2019. This leans more towards “new-world” Rioja. Reminds me more of an upper-tier, earth-forward California or Chilean cabernet; not so much a nuanced Spanish Rioja . To be sure, this is a very solid juice, just adjust your style-expectations accordingly. Better suited for a hearty steak dinner with good friends than a stand-alone / drink-alone. It gets smoother in texture the longer it is decanted; 8 hours in, and it’s still drinking marvelously.
Drink now, but will probably remain at this plateau until 2022.
I paid $75 US which I believe is a fair price for the quality and age.

  • 2012 Dunham Cellars Trutina

Decanted 2 hours, consumed over 6 hours. All I can say is Decant, Decant, Decant.
Best between hour 3-5. Wow did this just blow up in the glass after a couple of hours.
I forgot how much I just love the Truntina. Possibly even better than the amazing’08 vintage. Super full-bodied structure, rich boysenberry cobbler, vanilla, and a bit of dustiness to take it to the next level. This could stand up to almost any producer out of the Horse Haven Hills area. In fact, very reminiscent of some of the best $75 juice that I’ve ever had out of the Champoux vineyard. In fact, this may be the best cab-blend under $25 to come out of Washington in over 5 years; maybe ever. 93+ points
