Consumed on the anniversary of the sudden death of my mother (who once urged me, upon learning I had purchased this for $75, to sell it in order to buy new windows). The first thing one notices is the pristine color, limpid light red to the minimal rim, no bricking. The nose is mostly earth and cured meats, along with some wild herb I couldn't identify. After three hours in the glass I thought it took on an Amarena cherry note. In the mouth, bright and present, with stewed cherries and herb crusted seared meat, with some white pepper as well. Beautiful mouthfeel, acids and fine tannins in balance. I have much more experience with old Hermitage than old Côte-Rôtie, and the Gentaz struck me as more pure and lithe than 80s Chave (not better, just noticeably different). The finish was long and turned toward Chambord, albeit not so sweet. This was a beautiful bottle, a testament to its origins, and a privilege to taste. Here's to you, mom.
