Quartino at a restaurant. Pairing with pan-seared Labelle duck breast, warm broccoli salad, piperade and toasted pinenuts. Old Rioja flavor from a long time in old barrels that no longer had any distinct taste of different tree source. A simple well aged red wine that quietly supported the wonderful duck flavor prepared correctly. The meal was about the duck and the wine did not get in the way, just sang in the background its part in the ensemble.

Not sure there is a more elegant Rioja Gran Reserva than these. The latest of many vintages. It is comparable only to itself. Grand indeed. In its own way. A Zurbarán still life / naturaleza muerta in a glass.

Brunellos made 50 years ago had one top of the line producer -- Biondi Santi and 2 second level -- Costanti and Barbi Reservas. Never tasted a Biondi-Santi . 68 Barbi Reserva and 70 Costanti Reserva were superb. This last bottle of a case of 6 was in the same class as the Costanti and Barbi. Perfect elegance, austere, not over-extracted. Dionysus smiled tonight.

5/13/2023 1:13:00 PM - Thanks for your comment regarding my tasting note on Jasmin’s 2009 Cote Rotie. I wish I took more time on many of my notes, but we move briskly along to other things. I envy you taking the time to reflect! (Like you, I have also been tasting and enjoying wine for a while, since 1977 to be precise.)
4/6/2022 2:46:00 PM - curtr, the context of your tasting makes, of course, a huge differnece. Bad lot seems possible. Or poor handling before you got the wine, although I guess you got it early and reasonably direct fro the chateau. I share your fascination with watching multiple bottles of the same wine and the variables of them. I have written about this for the 82 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo. And yes older bottles are special.
4/6/2022 6:08:00 AM - The tasting note I posted for the 2000 Lagrange was at a Commanderie De Bordeaux dinner in Providence. I was surprised that the comments from the 27 people at the dinner were not as favorable as the reviews of several people I trust on CT. I agreed with the group that night. However, I wondered if we had an off case. We have 6 bottles remaining to try in the future. As the caviste of this group, I find that we have more bottle variation as the wines get older. However the risk is worth it to experience the character of the older bottles. I post under both Curtr and CellarBord.
