Squinzano! I think this is Italian for "wine is great fun!". A delicious and interesting bottle, great with pasta, pizza or sausage, and a terrific value. As much fun to drink as it is to say: Squinzano!
I do most of my shopping at a local grocery store called Central Market, and I've befriended one of the managers in the wine department (something I suggest all wine lovers do). About once a month I'll go in on a Friday night, put 7 or 8 in a box and tell Sean to fill in the rest. He rarely disappoints, and this 2001 Squinzano (Puglia) certainly didn't. According to the Bastianich & Batali book (if you don't already have this book, and are interested in Italian wines, get it), Squinzano contains mostly Negroamoro, with Malvasia and/or Sangiovese. I have no idea what was actually in this bottle, there's no information on the modest label.
The wine opened up in about 30 minutes with very sweet nose, almost maple syrup. There was something spicy in the aroma as well, but I never got much spice on the taste. A bit of veggie, some dark fruits and plums, short finish but easy to drink and interesting. Very enjoyable to discover something I'd never tried, a wine that reminds me of what's good and fun about this particular passion. I'm going to pick up a few more.

Wonderful, classy, elegant cabernet. Opened up very quickly, menthol and licorice nose, silky smooth very refined taste. Dark fruits, a somewhat brooding and reserved attack, but wonderfully rich. Nice balance, has all the elements to age nicely but should definitely be experienced now as well. I'd be very surprised if this one enters into any "closed" state along the way. A fabulous effort by QC.
