  • 2013 La Ferme du Mont Côtes du Rhône Premiere Cote

    60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre

A little tight but has complexity. Cherry, grapefruit, light strawberry notes, black pepper, dried herbs, a bit of animal hide, and a hint of crushed chalk. A bit of rubber and alcohol. A tad floral too. Medium bodied with powdery tannins. Sits a little hot but the acidity carries you home. Pretty nice CDR at under $15.

  • 2013 Ridge Lytton Springs

Inky deep prune, dried cranberry, and some blueberry. A lot of pewter and some bright flint notes. Bright metallic and smokey notes like a flint striker. A little floral with a hint of autumnal leaves and dark chocolate. Really opened up about an hour after opening.

Full bodied. Finish is long and resounding ... firmly tannic but harmoniously balanced by a lingering acidity.

Not going to rate as my palate was a bit compromised before tasting this. It's quite good though.

  • 2013 Concha y Toro Carménère Marqués de Casa Concha

Dark cherry, blackberry, saw dust, cedar, sandlewood, graphite, cinnamon, and mint. A lot of sauna-like aromas, which is great. A lot of heft to the body, plush mouthfeel, hearty dark fruit and roasted red pepper. Savory cured meat. A bit of smoked paprika.

Really fun and interesting. It's explosive in flavor with some nice chewy tannins, but the finish is short lived and the acidity rolls through the tannic backbone and then stops ... you're left sitting with a finish of alcohol. Personally, I like it (but then again I like whiskey so your mileage may vary).

A little bit lumbering and lacking finesse... but a good wine (and expression of Carmenere) with layers of complexity.
