  • 2006 Glaetzer Anaperenna

Straight from the bottle, liqueur-like in its intensity. After 4 hours in the decanter the wine has muted aromas of dark fruit, while on the palate the Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) slightly dominates the Shiraz (75%), with greater balance emerging as the night wears on. Rich with fruit and earth, lush mouth feel, yet elegant and sporting a well-balanced acidity that keeps the wine out of fruit-bomb territory. Obviously a class act, but still on training wheels. I'll give my second bottle at least 5 more years before revisiting.

  • NV José Michel & Fils Champagne Cuvée du Père Houdart

A blend of Pinot Meunier from '85, Chardonnay from '88, and a PM/Chardonnay blend from '86. Deep golden yellow, vigorous bubbles, and a foamy mousse. Aromas of plum and mushroom, extending to the palate, with the addition of an intriguing complexity found in a champagne finely balanced between youth and age. Balance is found too in the acidity, creating a full-bodied and creamy champagne that never feels heavy. One of the best champagnes I've had in a very long time.

  • 2002 Henschke Sémillon "Louis"

Last of two bottles (first bottle tasted in June 2005). Time has smiled favourably on this wine. This surpassed my previous bottle, which I had already labeled a "close to perfect Aussie Semillon", making this THE perfect semillon. With all the aromas and flavours of my previous note, with the added suggestion of nuts and a hint of petroleum. I feel that this can only continue to improve in complexity.
