Started dinner with Hollis, Elliott, and Roger with this. This was so good! Didn’t show any of the phenolic bitterness I often get on rose champagnes, and it did show awesomely complex aromas and flavors—things like ripe red peaches, tropical hints of guava and pineapple...just really an experience. But all balanced with a salty edge. A unique rose champagne that’s one of my favorites. This champagne for me was about a fresh and moderate weight palate with awesome aromatics and flavors—not super savory lees influence.

I’m totally biased bc this is my favorite Tuscan wine. This was a bottle purchased from k&l, drank with elliott, Roger, and hollis. Out of the bottle it was incredible—clovey, spiced, preserved cherries and lavendar, and intensely aromatic. I decanted this and there was just a little sediment left in the bottle. Palate was full and fresh—m+ acid, beautiful silky body, and long finish. Flavors of real maraschino cherries, Christmas spice, flowers, leather, and all sorts of other fruity and savory complexity. The comparison to Musar is somewhat inevitable...it’s like some of my favorite developed versions of that. Color is m+ ruby with garnet rim. For 2003 being a super hot vintage, this wine is so well judged!! Not lacking any desired acid on the palate.

Bottle was either slightly flawed or it’s just very awkward. Traditional Burlotto color and intensity — light reddish orange. But the nose is quite ripe and musty. Folks really sensitive to cork taint tasted and said it wasn’t corked, but was just unbalanced. Not consistent with my experience with other burlotto bottles, so we’ll have to see how the others are! Palate is super ripe cherries, a little bit of rose petal, and that musty mysterious earth character, with a medium finish. 2010 barolo normale was much better a week ago. Fascinating if it’s vintage variation.
Based on the other notes—looks like my bottle is weird! Will try 2011 next and see if I can revisit 2012.

9/30/2016 6:00:00 PM - Thanks for your message. The restaurant was Con Gusto. located in Porto Stefano on the coast of northern Tuscany. The restaurant was good, but not worth going out of your way to go to. However, finding a reasonably priced Biondi Santi Brunello was a treat.
