  • 2000 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Spottswoode Estate Vineyard

After reading some notes on this wine and vintage, I wasn't sure whether or not to open this up on Valentine's day, Feb. 14th ?

Thankfully I did ... an Awesome bottle of wine !!!

On opening, the cork was full of dark fruits and berries ... a great sign !

Decanted about 1hr and drank over the next 3hrs+ .. it really started to shine after about 1hr into the decant.

A bit of sediment on the bottle edge as one would suspect.

At the start, maybe a bit astringent but that went away after about 30 mins.

After 2 hrs in, although the nose was still a bit muted, a good amount of fresh dark berries, herbs, spice and almost a 'forest' floor, maybe even some cedar notes come through.

Just a great bottle overall .. not sure of the other comments, but I sure wish I had more of this one.

An exceptional bottle in maybe not such a great year ? Definetely a treat to drink !!!

Paired with roasted rack of lamb & mashed potatoes.

    An easy 94+ !!!

  • 2002 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon

Decanted and drank over 3 hrs+ .. started to open up about 2 hrs into the decant.

Lots of tiny sediment mixed in at the end of the decant as well as a good amount of large sediment in the bottle.

At the start, a bit astringent out of the bottle ...

Really started to open up about 2 hrs in, great nose of fresh herbs .. maybe sage? thyme ?
Not a lot of fruit at this point, more so herbal notes .. a lot less astringent though.

About 3 hrs in nose getting back to dark fruits and berries, less herbs ..
Drinking exceptionally well now! Very little tannin left.

Finished about 4 1/2 hrs after opening ... still drinking great!

A fantastic bottle of wine with several different layers over the 4 hr period.
An amazing experience and a pleasure to drink!

Definitely many years left in this one !

Paired with roasted rack of lamb & mashed potatoes.

A easy 95+, but probably will probably score higher over the next few years!

  • 2005 Colgin IX Estate

Decanted and drank over 3hrs+ ... started to really open up after about 2hrs.

A lot of sediment, as well as sediment etched on the bottle even at this young age.

Cork broke half way through ( as DRDAN8 experienced ), but manged to get the rest out without crumbling.
The cork seemed a bit soft, but IMO probably due to my own error as the cork was much longer than I thought.

Great nose from the start! Decanter smelt like a fresh jar of strawberry jam! Nose got even better ...

Lots of fruits, dark and light , obvious strawberries & maybe even cherries? Extremely smooth with just a bit of tannin.

Awesome bottle! This being my 1st time trying the Colgin and it was a absolute pleasure to drink ... could be one of the best Napa Cab's I've ever tasted!

This bottle will obviously get better with time ... easily a decade or more left for this one!

Paired with bbq'd steak and broiled lobster tails ...

Easily scoring a 96, but will probably get even better from here! Great stuff!
