  • 2016 Vina Gašpar Vergolas Cuvée Vinogorje Vrgorac

VERGOLAS Cuvée is a Bordeaux blend of 60% of Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot with a dash of local Plavka (10%). The wine comes from the outstanding 2016 vintage and has been aged for 16 months in 100% new oak. Unfined and unfiltered. 150 cases produced. 14,1% abv.

Deep ruby with dense tears. The nose delivers loads of dark fruits (blackberries, bramble, plums), cocoa beans, burning embers with roasted coffee and marzipan notes. The wine is medium (+) bodied with medium (+) acidity and firm but silky texture. Again dark fruits, toast and tobacco. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained ripe tannins and chocolaty notes on the finish.

Still primary with some tertiary presence of deliberate oxidation (chocolate, marzipan, walnuts). Lovely. Drink now - 2025. 92+

  • 2017 Vina Gašpar Plavka Vinogorje Vrgorac

Gaspar's Plavka (Plavina) is indigenous grape variety from central Dalmatia in Croatia. The vineyard is located in Vrgorac area in a picturesque village of Umčani distant only 6 km from the beautiful Adriatic coastline. The vineyard was planted in 1952. Organic approach is used, green harvest is common and the grapes are hand harvested.

The wine is deeply-inky coloured with oily legs, 14,5 % abv. and pH of 3,25. Concentrated with plush ripe black cherries, plums and figs. There's some bacon fat followed by the kick of wild flowers and liquorice. The palate is vibrant with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) body and medium (+) flavour intensity. The tannins are medium with a velvet texture. Nicely integrated oak with some cloves and chocolate notes. The finish is medium.

Well balanced and juicy. Very good wine. Will improve with additional ageing. Drink from 2021. cca 2000 bottles made. 91+

  • 2008 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino

Light, ruby colour. On the nose, lots of cherry, sweet spices, baked cake, vanilla, toasted oak, chocolate, red fruits, almonds, undergrowth. Cedar, red fruits, chewy and chalky. Tannic and austere, lacks in depth and disappoints in finish. Drink now - 2018
