Medium ruby-red. Piercing, intense nose of crystalline red berry fruit and spice, adding earthy and darker fruit tones and hints of mint and pine needle with air. Balanced attack with a spectacularly broad, dense, and complex midpalate (loads of red and dark fruit and earth flavors) that lasts a long time and compensates for the finish, which was a bit clipped at first. Over 3 hours this opened on the finish, showing some fireworks with grand cru-style lift before the curtain came down and the wine began to close in the glass. I'd say this is about to go down for hibernation now, check back in 8-10 years. A great wine and not at all particular in style.

Dinner at Charlotte & Joe's House (Berkeley, CA): Now we're talking. Dark ruby, faintest tint of orange on the rim. Enveloping bouquet of violets, citrus peel, forest floor, and spices with a hint of oak carries through to a broad-shouldered palate of earth, iron, and purple fruit with perfectly resolved tannins and a medium-long mineral finish that melds nicely with hints of wood spice. A terrific Pommard that is reaching the height of its powers. Chee says it may be the best Pommard he's ever had.
