  • 2005 Sandler Wine Company Syrah Connell Vineyard

Since I bought 6 of these, I felt no hesitation in popping one and seeing how it was drinking. I must admit that I was really looking forward to this based on two facts...Ed Kurtzman made the wine and that the alcohol content was only 13.9%! Certainly no guarantee of quality, but a mighty good start. I drank this over a 2 and 1/2 hours after splash decanting. Here's my notes...
App-opaque purple to the rim without variation, daybright, high intensity (4 pts)
Nose-Aromatic intensity was high (I could immediately smell it as I was pouring it into the decanter), lots of ripe blackberry, black raspberry, creosote, black pepper, violet, touch of vanillin, smoke, toast, allspice, little tilled soil, I was a touch concerned that this would be a jammy blockbuster on the palate, but it was a pleasure to smell (13 pts)
Palate-two things jumped out to me immediately, the wonderful weight/mouthfeel and the lack of heat, beautiful entry of fruit confirming the nose following through all the way to the finish, alcohol and acid are beatifully matched, defintate presence of tannins but they are long and well integrated, really enjoyed the way the fruit came across as plump and juicy but not jammy, this was a pleasure to drink and I look forward to watching it's evolution (18 pts)
Overall-I am not familiar with this vineyard, but I just loved Ed K's expression of it...all the parts are there-fruit, alcohol, acid, tannin, finish, wonderful harmony (9 pts) Total-94 pts

  • 2002 McHenry Vineyard Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard

Detailed notes on Squires, but his is fantastic stuff! Very light in color, wonderful aromatics, and silky yet intense on the palate. For those seeking elegance in new world Pinot, seek this out. The price was insane (less than $20). I'm trying the 03 "Swan Clone" tonight and will post notes.

  • 2005 August West Syrah Rosella's Vineyard

Infanticide I know, especially considering I only received 2 bottles from AW. Having said that, I've never had the privilege of drinking a Syrah from this vineyard, although I'm a big fan of the Pinots. I took this home after work, splash decanted, and enjoyed it over a two hour period. Here's my notes...
App-beautiful purple robe, almost black at it's core, daybright, high intensity, no rim variation (5pts)
Nose-med + intensity, fruit driven with background of earth and oak, fruits are black/purple (blackberry, black plum), dusty mocha almost coffee like, black pepper, smoke/char, clove, slight wet earth (12 pts)
Palate-high alcohol, high acid (nice piquantness), slightly aggressive wood tannin, fruit confirmed nose, elements seemed slightly out of balance (youth?), long finish, (16 pts)
Overall-all the parts are there, just a bit disjointed, will not open other bottle for at least 3 yrs (8 pts) Total-91 pts (could be much higher in a few years)

6/19/2020 9:40:00 AM - Hi there. I noticed you have a couple of 90's era Whitcraft pinots. I love those wines! If you have any interest in selling any, please let me know.
