An absolute beauty from Russell Bevan that won out at another fantastic wine dinner with the FM group. Decanted for 3 hours. Opens up big and complex, with a nose of dark fruit, spice, and pencil lead. Still dark and brooding, it is an incredible mouthful of blackberry, dark current, cassis, espresso and black licorice. Stays complex yet voluptuous. Tannins were perfect. It won handily in a blind tasting over a 2006 San Leonardo, 2008 Beau Vigne reserve, 2005 Continuum, and a 2010 Lokoya Howell Mountain.

Not a surprise that this effort from Joe Wagner is similar in style to his original Meiomi and Belle Glos offerings. It pours very dark with little translucency to the wine indicating the style. It has quite a nose of fruit and a rich and extracted mouthful of black cherry, raspberry, tea and spice. If you like this style you will find this to be a bit better than Meiomi and somewhere closer to the Belle Glos wines. If you prefer a more traditional style that is more refined and lighter on it's feet then stay away.

I enjoyed this wine very much. As expected the residue on the cork was black. There was a touch of bottle stink immediately after opening but it blew off quickly. It shows the pedigree of the 2004 vintage. Lots of blackberry, dark fruit and pepper is still playing out and the tannins are fully evolved. There is a touch of sweetness to the fruit that is indicative of 15 years in the bottle. Some subtle spice plays out with the richness of the fruit. I suggest it is time to drink this vintage of the Dead Arm should you have any stored away.
