After Somm In the Bottle, I wanted to try some Hermitage wines, because why not. I love this wine, for me this is what I think of when I hear “red wine”. Slightly breathy, a touch of heat on the palette, mild acid, a rich berry flavor that doesn’t punish you for drinking it. We had with a steak and herb brie cheese board, it didn’t lose out to any of the flavors present, nor did it over power the food. Smooth and refined enough for me. I expect it will age well. Picked up a couple extra bottles to find out.
My first thought was “Grapes!”, who knew a wine could be like grapes, a little hot which I like, medium weight on my palette, low acidity, not very heavy handed with tannins, finishs quickly leaving you wanting to have more. Does rob your breath like most 14% wines.
Had with a peppered steak with a cream horse radish sauce, held up well with strong flavours. Will to add to the normal rotation. Seems like it will age well, worth keeping a few bottles for a 8 to 10 years to see where it goes.

1982 Ernst Mees Piesporter Michelsberg Riesling Kabinett

Quite surprised by $5 1982 bottle. Color tells me the wine had not been stored properly, the cork was pretty much done.
The wine taste was still bright, fresh, tasting of a slightly warmed apple and pear. I would crack open another bottle any time.
