  • 2018 Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil Chorey-les-Beaune "Les Bons Ores"

    A vgv purchase from Swig some years ago.

    Lavender, red cherry coulis, baked strawberry and classic cedar cigar box are the tells for this fine villagey Pinot Noir.

    Tbh not a lot else is this village geographically besides the ‘strip’. All the better for the concentrated, considered wine making.

    In a great place right now and pairs heavenly with M&S crispy duck legs and port/orange sauce. Garlic mash and green cruciferous veggies a great accompaniment too.

    Will not benefit from much further ageing.

    Worth a look in. Anybody tried the 2017?

  • 2019 Depasso Nero d'Avola Leggermente Appassito

    Somewhat reminscent of a port-like Sicilian winesoup due to a fulsome body (14.5%), softened baked dark fruits but lacking much balancing acidity so therefore a dull acceptable romp around a winemaking high volume producer from the treasured triangle island.

    Baked blackberry, plum and black cherry with a hint of vanilla and sweet spice. The wine is velvety smooth but lacks any verifiable tannins.

    Would be somnambulantly acceptable to receive this as a long hauler inflight bold red to dull my senses - much like a mogadon.

  • 2018 Bodega Garzón Tannat Reserva

    Soft leather driving glove that has been doing some heavy punching on the battonage - and that’s just the nose.

    Sadly, despite my initial enthusiasm for opening this curiosity, the wine is a little bit neither here nor there.

    Deeply, darkly, starkly baked rather echo-ey dark fruits on the palate it’s a jammy wine due to a lack of genuine refreshing acidity. No real poise.

    Totally acceptable but not one to impress the mother/father-in-law. Meh.
