This is tasting better than I thought it would given the consensus window was “Drink by 2022” and I’m pouring it 4/2024.

While pouring my first glass a lovely aroma of fruitiness wafted up. “Hmm this is definitely Pinot.” Yup, looked at the wine info and it is indeed Pinot.

The color is on the more translucent side, as with many pinots. It still had a robust redness to it, not redish-brown like some pinots.

There is a wee hint of a sourness on the first sip, which fades quickly to a very light fruity grape. Almost a hint of Concord (GASP) flavor, but in a good way. Very light in tannins. Nice long slow legs.

I’m liking it. It’s not the best wine I’ve had, but it is enjoyable. I only wish I had opened it a few years ago so I could have tried it in its prime.

Believe the 2022 window .. it is very likely moving well past its prime. Drink up now and enjoy!

  • 2001 BOND St. Eden

If you still have this in your cellar, consider drinking it sooner than later. The community drink dates (as of October 15, 2023) says 2008-2026. I'm calling an upper at 2024.

    Do I like it? YES!

Flavors of dark plumb, and blackberries. We wee hint of licorice. Paired beautifully with a filet + compound butter.

My cork broke off about 1/5th from the bottom - yes, I did drive the screw all the way home - so I was forced to decant it through a strainer.

While decanting, the aromas were AMAZING. The "I can't wait to taste this" kind of amazing aromas.

Bond has been a favorite for years, and it continues to impress me.

  • 2001 BOND Vecina

Very enjoyable. Mild tannins. Ripe dried fruit flavors, heavy on dark cherry. I wish I had more of this!

The cork pulled apart, but I was able to easily get it out without it crumbling in to the bottle. I've had several other of Bond's corks from the early 2000s do this. The corks were still nicely sealing the bottle, so no worries there.

1/2/2022 7:52:00 PM - Thanks Rob! I didn't get the sharp finish, but I do agree with the amount of tannin. I suspect I let the wine linger in my glass longer during the evening (i.e., in-glass decanting) which might have helped soften the sharp finish.

1/2/2022 7:47:00 PM - JDB Thanks for the comment about my note on the 2014 Prisoner. I meant by "angular finish" that had a sharp finish and a bit too much tannin (acidity).
