  • 2003 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis

Good representatioin of a N. Rhone from a hot year.
The other tasting notes are all over the board with this wine.
I think the hot vintage impacted this wine, and so it does not taste like other older vintages, if comparing one vintage to another of Guigal's d'Ampuis. However, I did not feel this wine was bad on it's own. In our local wine group, everyone enjoyed this wine, and it went terrific with the lamb 3-ways(stewed, grilled ribs, and ground burger patty) at Black Sheep in SB!

Here are some characteristics I found:
A fragrant nose starts with smoke, brambles, pepper, spices, blackberry, cherry, and bacon fat. Medium bodied with subtle tannins, and a good mouthfeel. The wine has a long finish with good acidity in the background. Sweetness of some prunes, or plums is present due to this hot vintage, and then blackberries, violets, and other savory herbs become apparent as well. Palate is rich, ripe and full of depth - medium firm fine tannins. Overall a enjoyable on the palate, lengthy and good depth. I'm not sure this wine should be held much longer, but I do think it is drinking well riught now, if you take into account and expect the typcial warm vintage characteristics.

  • 2012 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane

Clearly(due to color and taste) this wine is oxidized. I have not had another to determine if this is a victim of premox, or the wine is consistent with other bottles(although I have 5 bottles left). Based on other recent reviews, this wine may typically be found in this condition. My impressions were that the wine lacked acid, but went OK with the heavy food(although it lacked the ability to hold its own with the food). Apricot, butterscotch, honeysuckle, and grilled pineapple, etc. were all present characteristics of this wine. I don't see any upside to this wine, based on this bottle.

  • 2018 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes

Great with some crudo of halibut and lemon juice at Black Sheep in SB. Typical PYCM initial aromas of struck match, which dissipated a bit by the end of the evening. Lighter in style than other wines Pierre makes, but compared to the other PYCM(2020 Bougogne blanc), this was way more substantial and complex. For the price(of PYCM wines), this is a good value.
