  • 2004 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva

I tried this 6 months ago and found the horsey brett obvious but not entirely overwhelming. Now the wine smells like Mr Ed has been rolling around in hay and manure for the past week, with a long overdue stable sweep-out and hose down needed. "Wilbur!!!"" What a waste of good wine.

From a warmer year this displays classic cracked black pepper, licorice and raspberry. Lovely balance, ripeness and structure. Lovely bright fresh acidity, the hallmarks of Craiglee Shiraz. Though very primary and difficult to gauge, this should be drinking-up a storm in 2025. Respect Mr Carmody - about the nicest and proudest cardigan wearing artisan you could hope to meet.

Superb. At seven years old drinking this is pure vinfanticide. The acid is thrilling - like sticking your tongue on a battery. The perfect foil for rich buttery dishes - think slow cooked gelatinous veal neck, porcini mushrooms and high quality Italian rice, or some beautiful spankingly fresh oysters. Really better to drink this in another 10 years.

Anybody who thinks Australia can only make 'sunshine in a glass' hasn't experienced what is arguably Australia's greatest white wine, a world-class style for grown-up palates. Is to Australian white wine what Chablis is to France.

You can have your pinot grigio and Marl-bro Savvy. More Hunter Semillon for me.
