  • 2017 Domaines Devillard Bourgogne Blanc Le Renard

From a half bottle (minibar at the Hôtel Plaza Athenée, Paris). A rather formulaic white burgundy, but it remains very correct and approachable. Well integrated oak, plenty of freshness and acidity. I would drink it again but wouldn’t seek it out specially.

  • 2019 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette

Served alongside a traditional Christmas dinner, the freshness and acidity here provided a perfect foil to rich festive fayre. What surprised me was how well this showed after the “main event”. A day or two after opening there is a definite barnyard funk on the nose, supporting a well balanced fruitiness and acidity in the mouth, alongside crunchy tannins that suggest potential for further aging. This wine whispers both high and low, taking a cue from its Burgundian big cousins while remaining sure footedly rooted in its Beaujolais home. A very accomplished wine at this price point.

  • 2019 Maria Pia Castelli Stella Flora Marche IGT

A golden straw colour in the glass which makes me suspect there was some skin contact here. Surprisingly little on the nose (perhaps too chilled!) but what is there is dry and yeasty, a bit like sniffing a glass of fino sherry. The palate is dry and opens up wonderful layers of stone fruit and exotic fruit - mango, passionfruit - but all balanced with superb freshness and acidity.

This is definitely a grown up white wine which surpasses all expectations. Tasted with a plate of cheese and crackers which was a lovely pairing, but I would happily serve this with hearty food (Italian or otherwise). I have one more of these "to drink" and four more in the cellar, where they will remain for a year or two because this is nothing if not age worthy.
