Ardalico is the new downmarket Querciabella label, downmarket of their plain label, supplying the retailer-wants-cheaper-thing-that-looks-special market. It's being sold about £5 cheaper the plain label was in the supermarket last year, but at £19 it isn't cheap Chianti.
I had a rather frustrating experience recently with the Querciabella Chianti Classico (plain label) 2019 recently. The first bottle was corked and the second bottle disappointing in comparison to the Volpaia I drink regularly. Despite describing this to my father, he bought a bottle of the Ardalico and brought it to share, thinking he was bringing me a fine thing. It was all rather unfortunate because we'd had some Volpaia 2015 only the previous weekend with pizza, and the menu for the weekend - asian noodle soup, fish - was rather unfriendly for Chianti. And I went down with a horrible cold. So the bottle got opened, decanted, hardly drunk, and stuck in the fridge.
From the small slug I had on the day it was opened, there was a very perceptible tannin, rather primary, a bit lacking stuffing. It was next approached on day 3, and is filling out the palate a bit, and some convincing body. I found this rather more convincing than the plain label 2019 I had a while ago, though still not enough for me to want to drink this rather than Volpaia. Maybe with a few more years it will be great.
