This really needs air for the residual heat from the 14.9% alcohol to settle in (or maybe a few more years to settle down even more), but once it has enough air (took us somewhere between 3-4 hours), this somehow marries the floral/aromatic signature nose of the Williams Selyem style and the intense fruitiness/depth of Zinfandel (blended with a few other field varietals). Loads of black pepper, berry, and cherry on the palate - this pairs so wonderfully with beef that you are hardly likely to notice any residual heat a few bites in and before you know it, the bottle will be gone.

14.9% abv. Dark ruby, very aromatic. Red cherry, black raspberry, cloves. A brilliant wine from a sensational vineyard with great balance, depth and length. Stunning now and for many years to come. Special.

The wine is a tasting room-only special blended from Zinfandel, alacante bouchet and a few other varietals from the estate-owned Saitone vineyard. There’s a delicacy here that seems impossible when compared to most jammy California Zinfandel, with so much fruit on the nose that it’s hard to stop smelling and start drinking. When you do, you are rewarded with cool fruit, some spice and perfectly-integrated tanin. It’s no surprise that it comes from a winery most famous for producing sensuous pinot noir.
The wine needed a minimum of two hours in the decanter, and could benefit further from at least another year in the bottle.
8.5/10
