South African Syrah/Shiraz competing on the world stage (Zoom!): Very dark in colour. Smells and tastes stemmy (there's 35% whole cluster) at first, then becomes more like mature Bordeaux. Plenty of grippy structure - lots of potential. Violets and Sichuan pepper on the finish.

Tasted next to the 2016 non-Reserve Syrah. More depth and complexity, more restrained and elegant, less showy and expressive. Spicy nose, hints of flowers, dark fruit, earth. On the palate powerful tannins, really grippy with a nice mineral core. Good acidity, lovely fruit. A little tight at this stage, this deserves a bit of patience. Very good. 92-93+
