5/9/24- Based on previous tastings, I felt this wine should be consumed sooner than later. Cork decent, slight!y soft, but no infiltration and not compromised. Deeply stained end, a dark purple, and small refractive crystals. Crystals most likely tartrates. No bouquet at all upon opening. Legs start quickly and in medium slow and are quite fat. First taste is astringent. Really closed but something is lurking. Nice feel to this.
Next day. Bright and juicy, red fruits like raspberry. Cranberry too? There's a tartness that stays briefly. Still a strong astringent bite, but it passes. Can smell the alcohol. Legs linger on glass sides. Finish about fifteen seconds, but tartness lingers. Maybe the best showing yet of this wine. I've had it twice prior. Lots of interesting scents in the glass but only when my snoot is right in the bowl. I used a more generous glass for this and it's helping. What's the alcohol though?
Now 5/12/24 Mothers Day and wine has held up admirably. Very beautiful, not thick or silky nor dense, but not feminine either. Seems like there is a menthol and earth profile. A great wine. Total vindication from a bottle I had a few years ago. I think this is the wine CT users experienced. And decent earthy bouquet to go with the flavor.
Based on the time it took for fruit to show its best, I think this can go another 5 years. I had this 3 times and two good showing bookended a bad one. I have to consider...was the middle one off, or was it in a 'dumb' phase that took time to resolve?

Decanted at Keen's Steakhouse in NYC. Perfect pairing with prime rib, definitely a "wow" wine around the table. The heft was impressive, this is a big chewy red, lots of vibrant juicy fruit, hints of sweetness, with all of the mineral asphalt backbone - distinctly CA. A few guests preferred the '06 Shafer cab which was dryer, but this was my WOTN. 94/95

Solid cork, no infiltration. Stained deep maroon. Little to no fruit upon first taste. Wait, now fruit present, and tannins. Burgundy in glass with light rim. Coiled and tight but sense there is much here. But it never arrived. I tasted throughout day, next day, and day after that, and no fruit and not much in the way of secondary flavors. Disappointment in this one.

Opaque purple. The nose was predominantly dark-fruited with blackberries, licorice, boot polish, lead pencil and some floral, lavender and mineral notes thrown in for good measure. Full, round, rich dark-fruited palate delivered with energy and focus. Some raspberry and savoury notes appearing on the long, long finish. Excellent balance. This bottle was in a really good place and I suspect may hold at this level for at least another 5+ years.
