  • Willi Schaefer in the afternoon (Tucson, AZ): Immediately following the 10 G-D Kabinett and before the '13 G-D Spatlese #5..

Incredibly similar to the '10 Kabinett. Same fruits, same florals, same slate, it just has more density, intensity, and depth, even if it is not quite showing all its cards. It's mouthwateringly fresh, pure and seamless, with a wonderful interplay of fruit, soil, RS and acidity. Another wine with a sense of harmony. This is seems like the Domprobst Kabinett just dialed up a bit. It's delicious right now, but I suspect it will be even better little down the road when it hits its full stride. It all seems to be there, and everything seems poised and in place. Terrific wine and a beautiful study in terroir. 94+

  • Rr cellar, jut note: Leafy green, plenty of coarse tartar. Intro petrol phase. Creamy, vanillin opening, underlain with a clean peachy leesiness. Crisp, dryish, clean, with an Italianate, brothy note. Lotsa Schafer spunk, with room to grow. Romain 2015 family reunion At Linda's. 93/100, within 10 minutes after opening. Now--??

  • My WOTN...This has a lovely richness with balance. A decent dose of botrytis in this one. It had a great color contrast to the 2013/2009 tasted along side. Still on the upswing with good potential.

  • Chicago ♥ Willi Schaefer (Chicago, IL): #05-11, 7.5% abv. Surprisingly darker colour than I would have expected. Likely there's a slight bit of botrytis here, given the darker colour and slight bit of spice. This is kind of gangly right now, with disjoint elements of acidity, spice, and sweetness showing one after another on the palate instead of in concert. There's no denying the quality of material though, and I'm confident that given some more time, this will mellow out. Definitely high acidity here, though I think the 2013 seemed to have even more.

  • This is a magical Spätlese. Stony slate and bright, honeyed apple come through with amazing purity on the nose. This clocks in at 7.5% alcohol, but the impression of sweetness in this wine is very, very restrained. Terrific acidity is present, but not at all obtrusive or out of balance. The palate balances fruit and rock perfectly. The finish is achingly long, firm but somehow still tender and elegant. What a beautiful wine.
