Medium red in color. Very muted fruit. The tannins are coming on strong. The nose clearly shows the wine is over the hill and fading. Any left in the cellar should be drunk now, as it won't be drinkable in 4-5 years.

Entirely brick-red in color, fading to burnt orange at the rim. It's really showing its age on the nose, with only the faintest hint of dried red berries remaining in the way of fruit aromas. But it still draws me in with an intensely spicy/woody bouquet of cedar, smoke, cinnamon, clove, and potpourri. There's also a gentle tobacco/menthol sweet-herbal note lurking in the depths. It's no longer a powerful nose, and it seems to slip away as it sits in the glass. On the palate, it still has a lot to say, though. The tannins have mostly resolved and no longer grip very hard, but there is still enough structure to undergird everything with a pleasant bitterness and lend a velvety texture to the medium body. As on the nose, the bit of fruit that remains is on the dried-out side, but again there is the compelling cocktail of mature flavors, here supplemented by a distinct umami savoriness that brings to mind mushrooms just pulled from the earth. On the finish, there 's a fruity flash of the sour cherry this wine had in its youth, immediately swept away by Italian amaro herbal-woodsiness and bitter chocolate. At the moment, it's still an interesting and enjoyable wine, but it's fading. Drink up.

Cherry skin, red clay but seemed to die down after 45 minutes
