1982... I were still a lad back then. A Gran Reserva although the label doesn’t admit to it. Brick red edge, medium depth. The medium intensity nose says tertiary. Leather, spice, cedar wood, chocolate, truffles, liquorice, ripe red fruit (raspberry, cherry) and general loveliness. Full body, high but fine tannin, and pronounced flavours as described. Med+ pH. Good length, driven by flavour not pH. A very good wine.

Was oddly disappointed by this wine, not because it was bad, but because I was hoping for so much more. Was really light and enjoyable, but frankly drank like it was 5 years old. hit its peak after an hour of decanting, but didn't experience any drop off as it sat for a few hours like others seem to have experienced. Despite the 2018 drink by date cellartracker identified, seemed like could wait for many many more years. leather and sour cherry.

So I don't have a ton of experience with Rioja this old, but this is simply amazing. Leather, sour cherry, all the things you want from a 34 year old wine. Kind of disappeared after 3 hours open so I would drink it relatively fast after opening but maybe that's just me. I found three cases at closeout pricing so I'll update over the next few years with how this develops. I can't wait for the journey.

Decanted briefly for about 30 minutes, with minimal sediment in the bottle. Cork is clean and doesn't show signs of past seepage. Deep red color in the glass with a slight garnet rim. Aromas of saddle leather, black cherry, ash wood, olive and violet. Medium bodied palate brings black and red cherry, anise, gooseberry and a hint of pepper. Tannins are medium and acidity is still medium-high. The wine finishes relatively long. Surprisingly, the wine comes across significantly younger than its vintage and feels like it could continue to improve for some time. Well balanced and quite enjoyable.
