Each year my wife and I go to the Benefit Tasting for the Repertory Theater in St. Louis. Her first duty is to taste all of the Chardonnays and pick out her favorite of which we buy a case. This year the Isabel Mondavi won for the second time. It is the only two-time winner.

Exceptionally smooth Chardonnay. Subtle flavour here - oak and butter. The nose is a bit harsh on opening and no legs to speak of, but a truly delightful wine.

Mostly American Wines; 7/2/2014-7/6/2014: Nose of bright white peach, honeysuckle, green pear and sea salt, Tangy and bright with lemon verbena, orange peel, apricots and crunchy white cherries. Lemon tea, margarita salt, whipped honey and graham cracker notes, but it’s still very floral and bright.

(Isabel Mondavi Chardonnay Carneros) Light medium straw yellow color; focused, appealing, tart pear, apple nose; tasty, poised, tart pear, tart apple palate with near medium acidity; medium-plus finish (simultaneous alcoholic and malo fermentation; 1/3 new oak; constant lees stirring) 91+ points
