  • Violet to plum color, light saturation. Savory nose of blackberries, dried herbs, violets, and a touch of smoke. Palate is med plus acid, med minus tannin with black cherry, dried sage, and bay leaf. Smells hot (and is at 14%), but palate is much more balanced. Elevated acid craves food. Very good wine now, but I wonder if a little time will calm down the elevated alcohol on the nose.

  • Lunch at La Strada (La Strada, Shaw House, Singapore): Another simple but proficient wine by the glass. I must say it did better with food than on its own though. The nose was classically pretty Barbera, with lots of violets and black cherries and sweet Italianate herbs - think thyme and sage. On the palate, slightly powdery, clayey tannins and fresh acidity formed a soft structure around more bright flavours of sweet, ripe cherries. On its own, this was a touch simple and maybe just nicked by a bit of alcohol flush. It just about went perfectly with the umami tones of our mushroom and veal chop dish along with its Marsala sauce, with the fruit standing as a lovely counterpoint and the heat dying down nicely into a little spicy finish.

  • Fresh and velvety. Classic Barbera character, dark fruits and high acidity. Long smooth finish, lovely with food.

  • Lunch at La Strada (La Strada, Shaw House, Singapore): Very pleasant - I enjoyed this more than the last time I had it I had a few months back. This had a classic Babera nose, with swwet cherries and pretty violets and just a little hint of vanilla, all spiked with brambly herb aromas at the side. The palate was nicely balanced, with lovely fresh acidities and fine tannins racing through open, generous flavours of chewy red cherries and dakwr berries and a nice mouthful of herb and spice. Not great depth, but more than enough to hold its own with the food. This wa. very enjoyable lunch tipple, and a nice accompaniment to our lamb.
