  • Soft musky scent of an old wine. Animal fur, old leather, bit of barnyard. Palate was gorgeous and a pleasant surprise. Ripe sweet fruits, very mature, still very very pretty and nothing offensive. Some tart acidity and a pleasant medium finish. Slow ox for 6 hours and didnt evolve much from the beginning. Would compete with much more expensive Barolo from the same era.

  • Just started getting going after an 8 hour decant. It smells strong and masculine with aromas of meat, animal fur, balsamic, blood, iron and liniment. It is dense and full with dark cherry fruits and plenty of meat and tar. There is olive tapenade saltiness and a finish with plenty of sinewy chew.

  • I had decanted our 1964 Villadoria Barolo Riserva some eight hours earlier and it was singing when we introduced it to beef. Fruit from Serralunga (in this case from Marenca-Rivette), has the reputation of having plenty of muscle and iron like structure and this wine was a posterchild for this. It was a strong wine, loaded with meat, iron and bloody things. There was just a faint nuttiness to the aroma and a little curry leaf, the only elements indicating that this is a wine of age, otherwise you could believe that you are drinking something 30 years younger. It gained vinous sweetness in the glass and had plenty of floral nuance. A most engaging wine, absolutely perfect with steak.
