One off ($59.99) from the big box wine store earlier this year. On the nose and palate, medium vibrant notes of red cherries, red raspberries, pomegranates, red currants (where on earth are others finding blue-black fruit?), lavendar and earthiness. This GSM blend is similar to many CdPs, although a bit lighter on the grenache, heavier on the syrah. A bit boozy off the pour (14.9% abv), this balanced out better after an hour or so and hit its apogee after about 2, losing just a touch of steam on nights 2 & 3. Nicely structured and lacking the blowsiness of many of its CA Rhone counterparts, this presents with a bit less complexity, persistence and intensity than CdPs I love like Pegau and Clos des Papes. Solid on its own, it excelled with chicken and goat cheese stuffed pasillas, with the wine’s piquancy complementing that in the dish. Like most of Helen’s Rhones, for my palate, this is probably in its best drinking zone (the 7-10 window usually works best for me), even as it benefits from a bit of air. Also like several other of the Keplinger Rhones of late, I liked but didn’t love this and am not sure it offers compelling value over its Rhone counterparts. 91-92

PnP at room temp. Surprisingly youthful in both appearance and flavor. Cherries and candied apples on the nose, with cherries and pepper on the palate. Good, full body with completely smooth tannins. The only knock is a bit of bitterness on the finish. This is my last bottle of the 2015 but I wish I had another bottle so I could taste it again in 3-5 years.

This wine was a standout amongst the lineup. Dead ringer for a CDP. Lots of secondary development that made this wine a bit more complex amongst the youthful bottles.

Soft and tasty. A lighter version of the GSM style.
