  • Discovered in my cellar a couple of years ago after being forgotten for decades. Served, with some apprehension, for Christmas dinner to accompany prime rib roast beef with horseradish cream sauce. It was a delightful surprise! Much of the fruit had faded, as had the tannic bite, but the mature notes of leather, smoke, and cedar were an excellent complement to the beef.

  • Some bretty funk on the nose but not distracting or overpowering. Game. But then showing it's age on the palate. Soft and round. a bit of blood and earth. Finally some soft red cherries showing late after a few hours. Then as it faded, the 14% showed more. A great wine in a great place.

  • Dinner at Green Hill (Chez Hutchins): This was drinking about as well as I can imagine it ever will or has. This, along with the Pomerol, were the only wines on their sweet spot tonight. It was a rich, seductive, supple wine. The spices, grenache fruit, and structure were all weaving together seamlessly. Just a stunning palate, really expressed the joy of CDP.

  • Pop and pour for Valentine's dinner @ Crimson. Nice translucent ruby color with bricking at the edges. Complex aromas of sweet red fruits, chocolate dust, cedar and roses. Outstanding flavors that were smooth, creamy and well balanced. The fruit flavors were both sweet as well as tart, accompanied by smooth acidity and tannins that all flowed nicely into a lingering finish. There was just a touch of heat, but this was gone by the end of the first glass. Subsequent refills found the aromas and flavors blossoming - and by the end of the meal (braised duck breast, thyme potatoes and glazed french beans/carrots) I found myself wishing I had bought a case of this wine rather than a single bottle. If nothing else I'll be seeking out more 1990 CdP to explore.
