  • Had this just after 2004 vintage and difference was quite tremendous as ‘04 was peaking and ‘87 seemed like rolling down for quite some time. Medium red with amber hue. Medium intensity rustic aroma of pencil shavings, goji berry, sweet tobacco, cardamom, dried cherries. Medium light body, unfortunately fruits are gone, replaced by hints of sherry, medium+ acidity, mild velvety tannins.

  • Wanted to try “something different” to serve blind alongside a couple burgundies of varying ages/maturity. Have often showed aged Chateauneuf d P alongside older burgs (and been fooled myself) surprising fellow burg lovers as to what other aged reds can show burgundian qualities. Served this blind to Xavier94 the other day and WOW, he really liked it. I did too but not quite as much. 93+

  • this is world class wine with tobacco, leather, graphite-type dusty minerality with tons of Burgundian-like sous bois complexity coming out to play with air time. Rich, creamy tannins that seem to melt in the mouth. A few of us immediately went to Burgundy when tasting this blind! A definitive chocolate/mocha note really starts to sing on this wine and widens even further, the aromatic complexity. No rush in drinking but this is hard to resist at present time. TOP NOTCH performance! 96.

  • Blind. Fading mid garnet. Good acidity, mellow old Rioja palate. Blind I thought this was let’s 50s to mid 60s. Apparently from distressed restaurant stock so the storage may have been less than perfect, and certainly not as good as a bottle a couple of years ago. The 87 Ardanza alongside felt equally mature and was from the same source. With some air this holds and opens nicely, good acidity, mellow faded fruit, quite silky in texture and reasonable length. For fans of old Rioja there’s lots to like, and a bottle with better provenance should retain wider appeal. ****

  • Tasted double blind. This might be slightly past its peak but is still drinking very well. While the aroma profile is quite intriguing, it was not perfectly clean and on the palate there isn’t enough tension anymore – at times it was a bit watery. Nevertheless, still a steal these day for a 30+ year old wine and definitely worth any search. 93/94 points easily.

TN: On the nose at first a bit of fatigue but that got better with a bit of air. Nice tertiary profile, tobacco, dark fruit, cola, herbal. Even more complex on the palate with additional red fruit, coffee, vegetal and earthy notes. Very round and harmonious with a slight lack of tension, melted tannins and a good freshness. Medium length.

    Decanting: No extensive decant needed.
