  • Very good. Nice acidity and minerality with slightly riper orchard fruit than that description would imply and a smooth, almost creamy texture.

  • Pale & light golden yellow in color. Fresh, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of grapefruit, lemons/limes & stone fruits with floral overtones of honeysuckle, minerals, stony, chalky & a hint of salinity in the background. Light bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, zesty, ripe fruit flavors of grapefruit, lemons/limes & peaches with minerals, stony & some honey notes. Lingering crisp finish. Drinks quite well at present and offers an excellent QPR.

  • The Pendulum Swings - Just a Little Less

    Earlier this year I did a review on the previous vintage of the wine I’m reviewing today. The post “The Pendulum Swings” was a reference to the fact that the wine had a wide array of reviews; 85 to 93 if memory serves. For this newest vintage, the range is slightly less; 90 to 92.

    Just as in physics where a simple gravity pendulum is an idealized mathematical model of a pendulum, the weight (or bob) on the end of a massless cord is suspended from a pivot, without friction. When given an initial push, it will swing back and forth at a constant amplitude. Real pendulums are subject to friction and air drag, so the amplitude of their swings declines, and can be written in the formula as:

    Got all that? Me neither. Let’s talk about the wine:

    Avancia Cuvée de O Godello 2019

    From the Valdeorras region of Northwestern Spain, and whose name means “Valley of Gold,” comes this wine that could be described in much the same way. These organic and traditionally dry-farmed grapes sit in soils that are primarily slate intermixed with small quantities of quartz; adding to the minerality of the wines.

    After hand-harvesting, 20% of the wine is fermented in used French oak barrels while the rest of the wine is fermented in stainless steel. Aging occurs for eight months along that same regimen.

    I love Godello, it’s a take on the Sauv Blanc style but with a bit more pizazz. Bright and crisp, with subtle honey notes and stone fruit and citrus and wonderful minerality brought about by the oak influence, which I love in SB as well.

    Just as the last vintage, my rating would bring the range up one notch to 93, but that still brings the swing of the reviews into a lesser range, so gravity and physics once again triumph.
