  • Mouthful of red and some black currant juicy fruit. Mild spice and bramble. Easy to drink but lacks significant depth or structure. Enjoyable.

  • Surprisingly good. Nearly black color. Initial nose was all muddy dark fruit. Palate nicely balanced with pepper and finish of leather and meat. Ripe, and feels like a wine that would be too sweet but kudos to the winemaker for resisting, which would have ruined it.

    After a few minutes the nose resolved to a sour urine note, which wasn’t ideal. But after another 10 minutes it came into a pretty blackberry type thing — dark fruit with a hint of perfume.

  • This cost me all of 12 bucks (Aussie).

    Far out.

    I needed a wine to restore my faith in Shiraz after opening a dirty natural Shiraz wine monstrosity.

    This over delivers in spades.

    Sure, it's commercial wine.

    But it is clean.

    But it tastes of shiraz, from Coonawarra, and it has length far beyond its price point.

    Curious to know how much of this is bought on deal Vs rrp.

    This is my go to when I can't find any Shiraz from the Grampians.

    It's not far from there, and it has so much in common.

    Savoury, medium bodied Shiraz with a sour cherry and pepper twang.

    I like this, a confusing shame it's currently positioned as a supermarket wine.

    This is very good, and exceptional value. When on deal it's a steal.

    Drink now to 10 years. It is a pup and if previous vintages are anything to go by it does not tire easily.

    Buy two of these instead of one natural wine monstrosity.

    Is that a little floral violet action coming through the aftertaste.

    Hmm. This is very good.

  • Glyndebourne (Rakes Progress - Stravinsky). Long Interval dinner in Middle & Over Wallop restaurant.
    Inky, very extracted feel to the fruit. Muddled palate. I have always liked Wynn's wines so I hope that this is just an aberration of youth. If (and I mean if) its going to come round it needs a couple of years in cellar to convince.
    2025 onwards (or the pot).

  • This wine often makes me think of Guigal's Cotes du Rhone, or Antinori's Peppoli - great value, mass produced reds that from time to time transcend their pop status to offer something a little more serious. A bit like James Taylor and my thoughts turn to 'Fire and Rain', a song that I am sure he wrote about an addiction to steak and red wines like this.

    I absolutely love this vintage of this wine. It comes raging out of the bottle like a hurricane, or a Maoist cow bent on revenge with an AK47 and RPG7 in each hoof. Soon the air is filled with lead, or plum, blackberry, sour cream and pepper and the heart is surging.

    Now my Maoist cow is singing like Ian Astbury (Yea-ah!) of Spanish Gold and Shape the Sky, because this wine has so much power and it is coiled and taught.

    Don't overthink these wines because they are cheap and cheerfuls, even when they transcend their status. Just love them more. Australian Shiraz showing balance and power; 'I like the way you whip my mind, lover'.

    Screwcaps and Robbie K have written two contrasting and very good notes on this wine. I think each is a valid take, though I have little doubt that this wine will still be giving a lot of pleasure (as a budget wine) in a decade. The acid and tannin are right and the fruit is ripe and the wine has cellaring pedigree. You can buy a dozen for the price of a decent cigar and guzzle 6 as youngsters and leave 6 for a bit to see what it does. I really doubt it will disappoint.
