Community Tasting Notes (22) Avg Score: 90.9 points

  • Note: I use the recommended scale, so 85 represents a very good wine.

There is a sort of mystique surrounding white Rhones.
Many believe that they are good the first few years after being released and then they go through a quiet or dumb stage, with the length of this stage being somewhat indeterminate, but certainly ten years. I am agnostic on this matter, although I tend to allow wines to age rather than drink them young.

This bottle was true to form -- rich and full. If you are looking for crispness, look elsewhere.
I think BVal (1/11/2023) summed the wine up well, although my score is not as high as his/hers.

  • Ha ha! Surprised by this being blanc. Purchased 2 bottles at auction (no notes at all regarding color) and thought it would be 2 bottles of the rouge but received 1 bottle of each color. Not disappointed at all!

Color/App: deep, bold, buttery yellow with gold tints; medium + viscosity. Certainly an enticing, mature white Rhone nose of beeswax, lanolin, apple and honeycomb with an oxidative nuttiness. Big, round palate showing stone fruit, pear, apple and a touch of citrus, buttressed with marzipan and a little honey and finally, a slate-y minerality (that's a whole lotta stuff there!). Viscous and full bodied, this isn't for those who need a lot of acidity or who are averse to some oxidative notes. I can understand scoring this lower if you're in that group. While I would like a bit more acidity, I find the oxidative elements fascinating as I don't think they're too much and add a level of complexity here. Hard to believe this has held up this well for 16-17 years. If I had any more, I'd be inclined to enjoy them soon.

  • A bit tired and flat - this had tropical fruit and bit of minerality - finishes short and fading

  • A wonderful surprise. I too thought I was opening the red but this was really nice. Tropical fruits and pears with full body goodness and a finish of honey.

  • Pleasantly surprised. Aged very well. Time to drink this year!
