  • In a fantastic place - ripe cherries and raspberries, great mouth feel, long long finish. Drinking very well now but has the backbone to go longer.

  • Better than my last one and this was given much more air time and it really made a difference. Fragrant nose of cassis and menthol, the palate builds up with a well structured middle part with a finale on crème of cassis, camphor, spices. Still on its ascendency I think and room to improve.

  • This was reminiscent of an older French cab to start but then the American cab and fruit came through.

Definite secondary notes in the initial attack. Then cherry and red fruits with some light guava which is making this difficult to place. I am in two minds and I think the wine is too. The indecision is a slight problem for me; both are great in their own right but create a slight imbalance as it moves to its next stage in life. If you like older wines, maybe give this another year or two to age some more. I would probably have preferred this a year or two ago (as I prefer younger wines anyway). The tannins are still nice and strong (not overpowering) and I like the finish.

Fairly strong Tobacco on the nose and this improved with one hours decant.

I imagine this could be rated 95+ by many for a wine this age but I am going to keep it at 93

  • Deep garnet red with light sediment. Aged nose with leather, truffles, oak and black cherries. Medium tannins (6.5/10) with a medium plus body. A mix of old and new world in style. Has the acidity with fruitiness coming through on the palate. Raspberries on the palate with some currants and oak. Medium plus to long finish. Drink till 2025.

  • Yet another excellent showing by an early 2000's Heitz Trailside. This bottle was ex-winery, library released to few retail stores prior to the winery sale a few years ago. So, the provenance was perfect, but getting the cork out in one piece was an adventure. Sublime, new world interpretation of an old world style. It will definitely not wow anyone whose palate is acclimated to modern wines, but I loved it, and it transports me to a slower, more analog time in my past. I didn't know at the time of purchase that the winery was getting sold. Otherwise, I would have bought this by the case.
