After some disappointing 1950's Riojas this was a welcome relief. The colour is deeper than I would have expected. Some of these deep coloured Riojas have been maderised so it's no indication of good health. Nice old rioja nose, not particularly orange peel but nice old fruit and woodsmoke. So alive on the palate, could be decades younger. Joy to drink. So hard to find these days. Opened on Klopp's last match with Loverpool. You'll never taste alone!

BYOB with wines 30+ years (Sollentuna): Volatile acids, blue berries, saddle leather, a little stable whiff, some heat on the finish. I guessed a Musar 1988 or Tahbilk ESP from same decade. Good stuff. Faded quickly. Amazing how it has held up though!

Mature Rioja @ Medlar (Medlar, London): Mid garnet. Again, a little volatile initially. Similar on the palate to the 54VR but a little richer and with more coffee. Settles down nicely and opens to a classic, smooth richness. Leather, spice and coffee. Lovely. ****1/2

Fantastic level. Deep garnet to an almost ruby core. Lovely mature Rioja with a vibrancy and depth. Core of mid red fruit, some orange peel and spice, but this is more about the velvety fruit and silky, caressing texture. Opens and develops over a couple of hours with the last glass being the best. Should have decanted. Long, nuanced and complex. Really super. ****1/2

@BYOB, tasted blind
Amazing Rioja that's alive and interresting. Oak, led pencil, vanilla, spice, butter, synthetic banana, some sweet fruit
