AP # 005 15. Pop and pour. This was the second BA they made (after 1976), and they made a whole Fuder of it. NB - there was a ring of tartrates at the bottom of the bottle. Orange-gold. Classical aromas here - saffron-botrytis, super-ripe red skinned peach, lots of delicate flowery honey (orange flower, bergamot?) Really fine texture, silky and rounded and not overly sweet, with some spice in the midpalate. Long on the finish, with flowers and peach syrup.

Just Fantastic! Upon release this was an unruly Monster. The acidity was so piercing that you could feel the enamel melting off your teeth. A decade has mellowed this effect leaving behind a treasure. Nose is dominated by Pulverized slate, tingling lifting acidity, floral notes, Bergamot with base notes of Grizzled botrytis adding a peppery note. On the palate the acidity still tingles on the tip of your tongue but, the rich dense fruit that comes in waves offsets this perfectly. Full bodied, rich with spicy botrytis, Minerality and a Salty Tang on the finish. Lime Zest. Ice Wine comes to mind. Very Satisfying. Hard to pick out a specific fruit but, uber concentrated granny smith apple with drizzles of white honey comes to mind. From a small family estate, run by two brothers in their 80’s with low production (under 2,000 cases). Only the 2nd BA produced here in the last 44 years. If you are a fan of Riesling this is a must try. Juice is from Lang Pichter and Sonnenuhr. Enjoyed on its own @ 40-55. Purchased from distributor as direct import and stored accordingly… Na zdrowie

Blind Pinots and Syrahs at David's (Enfield, CT): So elegant, pure and delicate for a Beerenauslese. The botrytis is certainly quite noticeable with a strong spicy/honeyed scent, but there's such amazing purity and clarity to the layers of fresh Riesling fruit, florality, and minerality beneath. It's certainly intensely rich and sweet, but there's the powerful acidity of the vintage balancing it and keeping it remarkably light on its feet at the same time. Fantastic Riesling.

One of the most elegant BAs I have ever tasted. It had a bit of a shroud of botrytis that needs some additional time to integrate, but overall it was fruity, long and very well balanced.

Brilliant lime and honey nose with a hint of botrytis, dense and very long but also light and readily gulpable with bright but well-integrated acidity. Lasted well in the fridge for a week.

(Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling BA) ($46.00) The wine is amazingly gauzy and even refreshing, though with concentrated but refined, even noble fruit. When has a wine with 137° ever been so lithe, so bewitchingly spicy? Pure apple compote and cinammon. This really is exotic yet classic, not at all recherché. *

(Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling BA) ($49.00) I noticed that “#5” on the list. “How much did you make of this?” I asked Alfred. No one ever makes a lot of this kind of wine; usually you hear about “60 liters” or “120 liters,” but Alfred looked at me quizzically and said, as if it was self-evident MMMM, a Fuder, (naturally). Ohh-kay. The first BA they’ve made since 1976, and they made an entire barrel of it – 1200 liters! And this is because they wouldn’t make such a wine unless they could make a barrel of it! It was picked en bloc from two parcels, the great Lang Pichter and the equally great Sonnenuhr (downstream between the sundial and the road, perfectly sited and sheltered). The wine is amazingly gauzy and even refreshing, though with concentrated but refined, even noble fruit. When has a wine with 137° ever been so lithe, so bewitchingly spicy? Pure apple compote and cinammon. This really is exotic yet classic, not at all recherché. And you can drink a couple glasses! And open another bottle – there’s a fuder!
