  • Tawny coloured, light intensity. Mature, pronounced nose with smoke and charcuterie. Fresh acidity, marked but soft tannins, medium body. Good length with a lingering touch of leather. Mature with remaining fruit. Remaining impression, typical Rhône Syrah, with lightness and freshness. Good yes, but had hoped for more nuances, probably passed its prime.
Enjoyed at dinner, no formal notes taken.

  • A little uncertain of what to expect from this one. Basically a very good vintage in the Northern Rhône, but Les Becasses is not one of Chapoutier's top wines. A number of notes expressed that this probably is past its peak. Decanted carefully and only got 20 minutes of air before the reindeer was plated. Fortunately, nothing to worry about.

Maybe not love at first sniff, but with some time in the glass the wine opens up nicely. It alternates between red berries like cranberries and lingonberries and a delicious cool blue fruitiness. There is also a distinct florality here reminiscent of violets. Also scents of undergrowth and earthiness, pepper, leather, tobacco and a hint of coffee. No intrusive aromas here, but there is a great complexity in the wine when you give it time and space to communicate.

Medium concentration in the mouth, with a slim mouthfeel. Still plenty of velvety tannins, good acidity. Great balance and more than enough fruit left. I am really seduced by the lovely cool blue fruit. Only 12% alcohol. However, I could have wished for a slightly longer ending.

Nice start to the wine year 2023 this.

  • Stood this up for several days. Did a pop and pour and realized afterwards, I definitely should have decanted for a while. First night, even after 3 hours, couldn't coax any personality out of this wine. Definitely a major change the next night. The nose was full blown potting shed and roast beef. The palate was mid body with dark fruit, earth, and a bit of rotten apple notes which I didn't care for. Lots of tannins still, but I think it is definitely past it's prime.

  • Drinking wonderfully. I was worried that this would be too old but to the contrary it was excellent.

  • The wine was unfortunately tired.
