Dinner at Mike and Cathy's place (Wellington, New Zealand): Colour primary red, traces of purple. Nose of raspberries, red cherries, damp earth, sous bois, surrounding red cherry. On palate, this wine is not a stereotypical 2007 red Burgundy (I’m guessing 2002 or 2006, from the acid profile). Very good fruit weight, concentration and power, with a nice spine of bright acids. The flavours are tart sour cherries and other red fruit with savoury aspects, showing suave tannins. Good structure. Drink now or hold for 6-8 years.

Three Burgundies and a Swiss (with a sweet Rheinhessen Riesling to finish) (Our place, Bern, Switzerland): Tasted blind against three others. Medium-light garnet red. Red berries, with a twist I can't describe in words. But fine, elegant, somewhat restrained. Good body, intensity and liveliness. Very good, savory. Strong tannins, the most tannic of the lot. In the following three days it developed and went towards tobacco in its aromatic, perhaps with some other spices too. On the palate it was juicy ans austere at the same time, and the tannins never really mellowed. Wait a few more years before opening the next. ***

I love this pinot noir smell of cassis and dry oak in perfect equilibrium (and I know I cannot yet quite describe it). The palate starts very fresh, with red berries and cherries. It takes warmth and a little weight in the middle. Then continues with a little astringency and a long ending. A somewhat bitter aftertaste which I like. Beautiful.

Le Serbet/ Becky Wasserman's 35th Anniversary Celebration (Château de Sully - Southern Burgundy): Magnum directly from Nico. Red cherry with moderate spice, very good overall balance. Moderate length.
